A huge step forward with SAE Institute

Recently our Director, Kira Lonergan, gave a talk at SAE Institute on how to set up a game studio. Turns out they loved the talk and have written an article about it!

Kira opened the session with a personal narrative about her journey. “Starting KittiCat Games was a dream nurtured by a love for gaming and storytelling,” she reflected. “But translating that dream into a successful studio required strategic planning, perseverance, and a deep understanding of the industry.”

Blueprint for Building a Game Studio

  1. Planning Ahead: Kira stressed the importance of a clear vision and a robust business plan. “Your studio’s identity and goals are foundational,” she asserted. “Define the types of games you want to create and understand your target audience. These elements are critical in forming your business strategy.” Before you start out with your own business venture, ask yourself what it is you want to do in the world of games. What will make your studio different? Who are you doing it for? “For us, we decided we wanted to make games we enjoy playing ourselves as well as making. Our studio is focused on our people enjoying it – there’s nothing worse than working on a game that you’re not into.”

  2. Working out Your Niche: “We focus on horror and detective games, that’s our niche. Having a hook is important – everyone knows Dambuster Studios and Lucid Games – they have specific styles that they are known for so figure out what it is you want to do. You don’t need to totally stick to it but have it as your main idea and focus so gamers know what to expect from you and your business.

  3. Assembling a Talented Team: “A studio is only as strong as its team,” Kira emphasized. “Hire individuals who not only possess the necessary technical skills but also share your passion and vision for gaming.” (Read More from the article here)

Navigating Challenges and Learning from Mistakes

Kira candidly shared the challenges she faced and the lessons learned along the way. “Every obstacle was a learning opportunity,” she said. “Adaptability and resilience are vital. Pre-production planning is essential to avoid costly mistakes down the line.”

Interactive Q&A Session

The presentation culminated in an engaging Q&A session, where attendees sought Kira’s advice on various topics. When asked about the biggest pitfalls to avoid, Kira responded, “Avoid rushing into development without thorough planning. Pre-production is crucial to laying a solid foundation for your project.”

Inspiring Future Game Developers

Kira Lonergan’s presentation at SAE Institute Liverpool left a profound impact on attendees, sparking inspiration and ambition among future game developers. “Sharing my experiences and guiding the next generation of developers is incredibly rewarding,” Kira remarked. “The future of gaming is full of potential, and I look forward to seeing the innovative creations that emerge.”
